Stroke is a condition with rapidly developing clinical signs of focal loss of cerebral functions with symptoms lasting longer than 24 hours or leading to death, with no apparent cause other than that of vascular origin. It is the most common cause of acquired disability and the second leading cause of mortality and a major cause of hospital admission, morbidity and the third leading cause of death in most developed and developing countries. In Zambia baseline awareness about stroke is poor due to the general lack of access to health education. The purpose of the study was to determine the awareness of hypertensive patients on the causes and prevention of stroke at the UTH.
