This paper argues that retaining a simpler, universal effect of internal employment on the welfare of very young children is not a fruitful strategy. Instead, it suggests that (1) maternal employment affects children through a variety of mechnisms some positive and others negative (2) the consequent of employment depend on the familys' socio-economic circumstances and soci-contact. Data used is for pre-school aged children in the United States.
