Argues that in the rural development literature the attitude towards trade and traders has often been negative, although many different and often contradictory viewpoints are found. The purpose of this paper is to try and resolve some of the contradictions by seing trade and trading functions as an integral part of the larger production system as it is perceived in the broader framework presented in new institutional economics, network theories and the new theories of the enterprise.
