This study uses oral and written sources to trace and analyze the origins and development of the Lozi state and its institutions. It attempts to reconstruct the main features of the Makololo state and its impact on Bulozi in the middle of the nineteenth century and throws new light on the post-Kololo period to 1900 through a reassessment of Lewanika's career and the Lozi response to European forces.
