The aim of this study is to provide guidance for policy makers concerned with the improvement of African agriculture. It focusses on farmers who are using shifting agriculture as one of their techniques in the humid and semihumid zones of Africa. The study brings to light the interaction of several economic, social and institutional factors which help set up shifting cultivation as one of the major techniques of food production in Africa.
