The aim of this study is to provide guidance for policy matters concerned with the improvement of African agriculture. It focusses on farmers who are using shifting agriculture as one of their techniques in the humid and semi humid zones of Africa. This study concentrates only on the economic, social and institutional aspects. The study brings to light the interactions of several economic, social and institutional factors which help set up shifting cultivation as one of the major technique of food production in Africa.
