Based largely on field interviews, the study attempts to describe farming systems in the region. Evolution of farming practices and adaptation to changing conditions are analysed. It then reviews and asseses a large number of farm-level system changes. Then it provides recommendations on soil conservation and enrichment measures likely to be interesting under all circumstances. There are are also suggestions on possilbe diversification in export crops and attractive changes in cropping patterns.
