This overview of a symposium on labour market and adjustment discusses varieties of adjustment experience and the role of labour market adjustment. It concludes that: (1) real wages are more flexible than are generally supposed (2) labour reallocations across sectors have been more or less in the desired direction, and (3) the role of labour unions, generally supposed to be an impediment to adjustment, is more subtle.
