Summary: Mothers nursing their premature babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) often experience extreme levels of stress and poor coping. The stressors perceived by these mothers in NICU, from the most stressful to the least stressful were alteration in parental roles, sights and sounds, treatments, and hospital staff behaviors and communication. The purpose of this study was to explore parental stress and coping strategies of mothers nursing their premature babies admitted to the NICU at the University Teaching Hospital.
